Plastic surgery used to be considered a woman’s area of interest, with high profile females often seen sharing images and videos of their newly enhanced or reduced physiques. This is no longer just a woman’s pursuit, as the industry is seeing repaid growth in the number of procedures requested by men.
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the rate of male cosmetic surgery has grown exponentially, with a 325% increase seen since the late 1990s. The study interviewed 618 men and asked them whether or not they would consider going under the knife for plastic surgery.
Thirty-one per cent of those interviewed suggested that they would, and it was procedures such as liposuction, breast reduction, eyelid surgery, nose lift surgery and facelifts that topped the ranks of what they would be interested in.
The driving force behind these male cosmetic surgery trends
Interestingly, it is the modern man who is behind the majority of this growth, with 92% of men who claimed to be interested in undergoing surgery being classed as millennials. This term is used to describe those who class as being in ‘Generation Y’ – those born between the early 1980s to the mid-1990s.
It is believed that social media plays a key role in the interest in cosmetic surgery procedures, both for men and women. Access to social media platforms has grown rapidly in the past 20 years, with most of us interacting with at least one social media platform every day. With the likes of Instagram and Twitter awash with imagery of celebrities who have gone down the surgical route, it is no wonder nit had piqued the interest of so many people.

Back on our side of the pond, the data shows similar patterns. Although the was a general dip in demand for cosmetic surgery last year (believed to be due to an overall feeling of caution, post Brexit), there was a growth in the demand for tummy tucks from men, which rose by a whopping 47% compared with the previous year.
